Just watched both these films on the Sci-Fi Channel and BBC1, respectively. The Day of the Triffids is an early 60s sci-fi B-movie about the entire population of the world (with a few exceptions) being simultaneously blinded by a meteor shower and invaded by a large number of giant man-eating, walking (or rather shuffling) […]
I bought myself a Samsung TS-E552 external DVD writer at a computer fair yesterday. It connects to my laptop via USB2 and will write DVD+R and DVD-R at 16x, DVD+RW and DVD-RW at 4x, DVD+R Double Layer at 4x, CD-R at 40x and CD-RW at 32x. It seems to be working fine so […]
Saturday night was the annual GASFest event, a large meet-up of guitarists from the Intermusic Guitarist Forum, at the Rotunda Centre in Bristol. There were about 60 people there to take turns performing, watching, and drinking lots of beer. It was very weird meeting people who were previously only known by their cryptic […]
I’ve just got back from watching the prog rock band Asia at the Academy 2 in Manchester. I hadn’t heard a great deal of their stuff (except their latest album Silent Nation, which was OK but not brilliant). Anyway, live they were really good, tight as hell and they do have some really […]
I’ve had a fairly rubbish week. Lots of work to hand in (partially my fault as I left a lot of it to the last minute) and yesterday I came down with a particularly nasty cold and today I feel awful. I didn’t even have time for more than a couple of pints […]
Tonight I went to a concert at the Lowry in Salford featuring four of the world’s greatest guitarists - Martin Carthy, Martin Simpson, Martin Taylor and Juan Martin. Two folk guitarists, one jazz player and one Spanish flamenco player.
The venue is fantastic - a fairly small hall with the best acoustics I have ever […]
The Project Book for Third Year projects for my university course was published today. Having read (almost) all the descriptions of the projects, there’s nothing that really grabs me, but there are a few that look quite interesting and will require some more research.
There is one particular music-related one which looks tempting, but I […]
Our department held a social event last night at Scu Bar in Manchester. I was fairly surprised at the number of people who turned up - I’ve heard it was almost 100. Not bad for a notoriously anti-social subject.
I just saw one of the funniest things I have ever seen. I was flicking
channels and happened to stop on God TV. They were showing a live
performance of an evangelical Christian hiphop band called The Tribe.
Complete with tracksuits, breakdancing and rap. The “song” was called God
Squad.
I nearly wet myself.
I stumbled across an album of Beatles songs that have been mixed and blended with lots of other songs, from artists like Madonna, Portishead, Coldplay, Genesis, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Cure, Goldfrapp and Glen Miller. It’s very well done, and strangely entertaining.
You can download them all separately from here or you can find […]
