On the morning of the 6th of September this year, the fantastic guitarist Eric Roche passed away after a long battle with cancer. I picked up my guitar later that day and wrote an instrumental tune, which I called “For Eric”, and posted it on the Intermusic Guitarist Magazine forum. A couple of days later, I was contacted by Simon Bradley from the magazine. They were putting together a tribute for Eric and he asked if he could include my track on the cover CD that comes with the magazine. Of course I agreed, and so if you buy the October issue of the magazine from your local newsagent (it came out on the 5th, my 21st birthday!) you will find my track on the CD. I hope it’s a fitting tribute to Eric.

Over the past couple of days I’ve been experimenting with FL Studio, a pattern-based music production package. I downloaded NS-Kit, a free acoustic drum sample pack, from Natural Studio, and started making simple drum loops and layering some weird synth noises over the top. I eventually exported the whole thing as a .wav file and then layered some guitar onto it in Cakewalk (using a Telecaster plugged into my Guitarport, with the “Modern Jazz” preset.

You can download the finished track here (1Mb).

Bear in mind it’s just an experiment and so is extremely weird! The “Guitarist Forum” references are because I got quite a bit of help getting to grips with FL Studio from my friends over at the Guitarist Forum.
