In other news, on Wednesday I had my last exam. My degree is finished! Now we have to wait and see whether or not my final exams actually get marked (due to the current AUT action).

I’ve decided to change my course at university. I was previously studying for a 4-year undergraduate Master of Engineering (MEng) course in Computer Science. I’ve now changed to a 3-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) course, so I’ll graduate at the end of next year. I’ve changed because I had a good look at the syllabus for the third and fourth year of the MEng, and noticed that there are lots of compulsory business and management modules. The fourth year is about 40% business courses. These just don’t interest me at all, and I know I wouldn’t enjoy them. So I’ve stuck with the science subjects. The plan is, hopefully, to pursue a postgraduate MSc after I’ve graduated. Assuming I’m not sick of computers by then, of course!

In related news, I’ve decided on my third year project. I’m doing Binary to Bytecode Translation. Looks interesting!

The Project Book for Third Year projects for my university course was published today. Having read (almost) all the descriptions of the projects, there’s nothing that really grabs me, but there are a few that look quite interesting and will require some more research.

There is one particular music-related one which looks tempting, but I will have to give it some serious thought. In the past I have had trouble trying to link music-related things to my work. I did A-level projects in Electronics and Physics that were related to guitar or music in general, and I never really felt comfortable or got “into the swing” of the work. I seem to be somehow unable to connect my brain’s musical bit to the “I really need to do some work now instead of just messing around with the guitar” bit. If I do decide to go for that project, I’ll have to have a fairly good idea about what I’m going to do beforehand and try to stick to it. Fortunately it doesn’t really have any scope for being guitar-related as it involves MIDI files and 3D graphics, so it’s not like I’ll be tempted to just play guitar all day instead of working. Not that I ever do that anyway, of course…

I have a few weeks to choose my project, and I’ll keep posting updates about it as it comes along.
